Living in South Florida allows us to enjoy our backyards almost year-round. Unfortunately, the same warm temperatures, high humidity, frequent rainfall, dense landscaping, and nearby waterways that make our area beautiful also create ideal conditions for mosquitoes and other biting insects.
At Sparta Mosquito & Pest Solutions, we install and maintain automatic mosquito misting systems designed around each customer’s property. Through our hands-on experience, we have found that homeowners usually have the same concerns before investing in a system: cost, effectiveness, convenience, safety, and maintenance.
The following answers are based on our real-world experience working with South Florida properties—not unrealistic promises or one-size-fits-all recommendations.
There is no standard price for a mosquito misting system because every property and every customer’s needs are different. Before recommending a system, we first determine exactly what the customer wants protected.
Some customers only want coverage around a patio or pool. Others want to protect the entire backyard, outdoor dining areas, play areas, perimeter fencing, and dense landscaping. A small, open yard requires a different system than a large waterfront property with mature vegetation and several outdoor living spaces.
The final cost generally depends on:

In our experience, pricing a system without evaluating the property can result in insufficient coverage, unnecessary equipment, or an installation that does not address the areas where mosquitoes are actually resting.
We prefer to inspect the property, speak with the homeowner about how the outdoor space is used, and identify the areas experiencing the most mosquito activity. We can then design a system that provides the appropriate coverage without making the customer pay for equipment they do not need.
Automatic mosquito misting systems require ongoing service to remain effective. We service our systems monthly, and maintenance is generally affordable when you consider the quality and effectiveness of the professional products being used.
Monthly maintenance also protects the homeowner’s investment by keeping the system operating efficiently and preventing product from being wasted through leaking lines, damaged nozzles, or other mechanical problems.

Yes, professionally designed and properly maintained mosquito misting systems can be extremely effective. However, we believe in giving customers realistic expectations.
The results are not normally instant. Based on our experience, most customers begin noticing a decline in mosquito activity during the first month. After the system has operated consistently for a couple of months, mosquitoes in the protected areas are often nearly eliminated.
That gradual improvement is important to understand. The system is not simply intended to provide temporary relief for one afternoon. Consistent treatment helps reduce mosquito activity and makes it harder for the population to rebuild in the yard.
Nothing will eliminate 100% of mosquitoes forever. Mosquitoes can enter a property from neighboring yards, canals, lakes, wetlands, and other untreated areas. A few stragglers may occasionally fly into the yard even when the system is working correctly.
The difference is that those mosquitoes generally will not remain in the protected area for long.
We would rather explain that honestly than promise a completely mosquito-free property. A properly installed system can dramatically reduce mosquito activity and make a backyard much more comfortable, but no responsible pest-control company should guarantee that a customer will never see another mosquito.

The CDC recommends removing standing water at least once a week from containers such as buckets, planters, toys, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, and trash containers. A misting system controls adult mosquitoes, but homeowners should still eliminate places where mosquitoes can reproduce.
In our experience, nozzle placement is just as important as the equipment itself. Mosquitoes frequently rest in shaded, humid locations such as shrubs, hedges, underneath leaves, and within dense landscape beds. If those areas are not properly addressed, the system may not deliver the results the homeowner expects.

In my professional opinion, an automatic mosquito misting system is the better choice for homeowners who want consistent, long-term control without having to treat the property themselves.
The system is designed around the property’s layout and operates on a regular schedule. This consistency helps prevent mosquito activity from returning between treatments. The customer can also control the system through a remote and mobile app.
A handheld fogger can provide temporary relief and may be useful before a backyard party or occasional outdoor gathering. However, its effectiveness depends heavily on the person operating it.
The user must apply the correct amount, reach all the necessary areas, and repeat the process consistently. Coverage can vary from one application to the next, particularly when the person performing the treatment does not understand where mosquitoes rest.
The University of Florida’s integrated mosquito management guidance explains that homeowner foggers and similar adult mosquito treatments can provide immediate but temporary relief. They should be combined with source reduction and other control measures.
Periodic mosquito treatments can be a good option for properties with moderate mosquito activity or for homeowners who are not ready to install a permanent system.
However, South Florida presents unique challenges. Mosquito season lasts nearly all year, and our heat, humidity, rainfall, vegetation, canals, and waterfront areas can create constant mosquito pressure. When activity is severe, the time between periodic treatments may allow mosquitoes to return.

Every property is different, so we do not automatically recommend the same service to everyone. The best option depends on the mosquito pressure, the property’s layout, the customer’s expectations, and how frequently the outdoor areas are used.

Safety is one of the most important questions a homeowner can ask. We use products labeled for mosquito control around residential properties and follow the product label for mixing, application, and system operation.
The products we use are intended for residential mosquito control when they are applied correctly and all label directions are followed. However, responsible system design, scheduling, and customer education are still essential.
Homeowners who want additional information can review the EPA’s guidance on residential mosquito misting systems.
We typically schedule the system to mist when the backyard is normally empty, often during the middle of the night. If another time is more appropriate, we can program the system around the customer’s routine.
The homeowner also has control through the remote and mobile app. This allows the customer to stop a scheduled cycle when people or pets are outside, when guests are visiting, or when the yard is otherwise occupied.
Children, adults, and pets should not be in the treatment area while the system is operating. After a misting cycle, we generally recommend waiting approximately 30 minutes to one hour before returning to the yard so the product can dry fully. Customers should always follow the product label and the instructions provided by their licensed pest-control professional.
Nozzles should not simply be installed wherever they are easiest to place. We consider:

The objective is to create effective coverage while operating the system responsibly. A professional installation allows the nozzles to be positioned intentionally instead of treating the property without a plan.

In many parts of the country, mosquito control is considered a seasonal service. South Florida is different. Our climate allows mosquitoes to remain active during most of the year, making consistent control especially important.
An automatic misting system operates according to a programmed schedule. However, that schedule should reflect the property’s conditions, mosquito pressure, landscaping, and the homeowner’s routine.
The customer maintains control through the system’s remote and mobile app. If the homeowner wants to use the yard during a scheduled cycle, the system can be paused or adjusted.
The system does not have a rainfall detector. If it is raining, the customer can open the app and cancel the scheduled misting cycles for that day.
This helps avoid unnecessary applications and prevents product from being wasted. It also gives the homeowner direct control instead of forcing the system to follow the same schedule regardless of weather conditions.
Dense landscape beds provide excellent resting areas for mosquitoes because they retain shade and moisture. On properties with thick vegetation, perimeter nozzles alone may not provide adequate coverage.
When necessary, we can install additional nozzles between dense landscape beds to improve coverage. This is another reason every system should be designed for the individual property instead of installed from a standard template.
UF/IFAS also recommends an integrated approach that includes removing standing water, clearing fallen vegetation that can hold water, cleaning clogged gutters, and correcting areas where water remains after rainfall.
We service each system monthly to keep it working at peak efficiency. During a typical service visit, we:
